We Lost Our Instagram Account With 12,000 Australian Followers – Here’s How We Recovered
On May 2nd, DreamShift faced one of the worst things that can happen to a growing business: we lost our Instagram account, along with 12,000 Australian followers, overnight.
Almost 80% of our leads came from that account, where we posted daily videos about the Australian job market. Instagram was growing so fast that I had told our marketing team to focus only on Instagram and pause everything else. We were even Instagram Verified, spending $1,000-$1,500 every month on Instagram (Meta) Ads.
Then, in the blink of an eye, Meta’s automated system took the account down.
No prior warning. No clear reason. Just a message saying we had violated “Community Standards.”
Even now, we still don’t know the exact reason. We can only guess at two possibilities.
Why Was Our Instagram Account Disabled?
Our tagline may have been misread as a “guarantee” violation. Our tagline was “We write CVs with a 60-Day Job Interview Guarantee.” According to Meta’s Community Standards, businesses cannot advertise jobs with guarantees. Even though what we actually offer is an interview money-back guarantee (not a guaranteed job), Meta’s AI may have misread this as a policy violation.
Our comment-to-DM automations may have looked like spam. We had set up more than 10 comment-to-message automations. For every video, we shared free resources with followers through DMs. Even though this was built entirely through Meta Business Suite, the system may have flagged the repeated, similar-looking links as spam behaviour.
We Couldn’t Get a Human to Review It
We spoke with more than 10 Meta Pro Agents over the phone, and not one of them could get past Meta’s automated review system. This is the real problem with automating everything without a human in the loop – when the system gets it wrong, there’s no one to appeal to.
We later learned this wasn’t unique to us. Thousands of businesses and creators have lost accounts the same way, and there are entire subreddits full of people who’ve lost 10+ years of accounts and thousands of followers with no recourse.
Right now, the only real path to a manual review is filing a legal case against Meta – and that option is currently only available to US and Indian residents.
The Wake-Up Call: Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket
This was a huge wake-up call for me. I had put all of our marketing eggs into one basket – a platform I had zero control over. The moment it disappeared, our business lost its main source of new leads overnight, and there was nothing I could do about it.
How We Rebuilt in 8 Weeks
Fortunately, our marketing team leads, Rashmi and Isuru, stepped up. On the exact day we lost the account, they got on a video call at midnight, spent three hours mapping out a plan, and got to work the next morning.
Thanks to their efforts, within two months we had:
- Grown 4,000+ followers on Facebook
- Grown 3,000+ followers on TikTok
- Grown 3,000+ followers on a brand-new Instagram account
- Launched a $100 referral program
The best part: one of our clients, Tharushi, who landed her dream Australian job through our service, offered to help. She created brand-new Instagram and TikTok accounts for us and posted daily content.
After eight weeks, we’re now almost back to where we left off – and with a lot more marketing channels than before, so we’re no longer dependent on any single platform.
The Lesson for Other Businesses
If your business leans on one social platform for most of its leads, it’s worth asking: what would happen if that account disappeared tomorrow, with no warning and no explanation? Diversifying across channels – and owning ways to reach your audience directly, like email or SMS – is no longer optional. It’s risk management.
We’re sharing this story in case it helps someone else who’s been through the same thing, or who wants to avoid it altogether.
Have you had a similar experience with a platform suspending or banning your account? We’d love to hear your story.
