482 Visa to PR Australia 2026: How the SID Visa Shortens Your Timeline
If you’re on a 482 visa in Australia — or were planning to apply for one — 2026 brings a significant change to your permanent residency timeline. The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 visa has been officially replaced by the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, and the path from temporary work visa to Australian PR has been shortened from three years to two.
What Happened to the 482 Visa?
In April 2026, Australia legally replaced the 482 TSS visa with the Skills in Demand (SID) visa. Existing 482 holders are not required to reapply immediately — your current visa remains valid until it expires. But new employer-sponsored applications are processed under the SID framework.
The Old 482 → PR Rule
Under the 482 visa, transitioning to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream required:
- 3 years of full-time work in the nominated occupation
- All three years with the same nominating employer
- The employer had to actively nominate you for the 186 at the end
The same-employer rule was the biggest problem. If your employer went through redundancies, changed ownership, or you simply found a better opportunity, your PR clock reset to zero.
The New SID → PR Rule
Under the SID visa framework introduced in 2026, the PR requirement is now:
- 2 years of full-time work in the nominated occupation
- Those 2 years can be accumulated with any approved sponsor — not just your original employer
- The 180-day job search period does not break your continuity
The Subclass 186 ENS Pathway in 2026
- Get sponsored — Your employer applies to be an approved sponsor
- Apply for SID visa — Choose the correct stream (Specialist, Core, or Labour Agreement)
- Work in Australia — Accumulate 2 years of full-time work in your nominated occupation
- Apply for Subclass 186 TRT — Your current or any previous approved sponsor nominates you
- Receive PR — Permanent residency granted
What If You’re Already on a 482 Visa?
Option A: If you’ve already completed 2+ years with your current employer, you may be close to the old 3-year 186 TRT requirement. Completing your time under existing 482 rules may be faster.
Option B: If your visa is being renewed or you’re changing employers, the new SID rules apply. Time worked with different approved sponsors can count cumulatively.
The Real Barrier: Getting the Job First
The SID visa and the 186 PR pathway only activate once you have an Australian employer willing to sponsor you. The hardest step is often landing that first job — not navigating the visa process.
